HDD Hole Openers

For large-diameter boreholes, hole openers such as DTH hole openers, tricone hole openers, or PDC reamers are used after a pilot hole is drilled. The choice depends on formation hardness—DTH and tricone options handle hard rock, while PDC reamers work well in softer to medium formations requiring smooth enlargement.

A pilot hole is typically drilled first using a PDC bit, DTH hammer bit, or tricone bit matched to the formation type. Once the pilot bore is established along the intended path, a hole opener or reamer is then pulled or pushed through to enlarge it to the final required diameter.

A hole opener has a fixed cutting diameter and enlarges a pilot bore to a set size, while an underreamer typically features expandable arms or cutters that can adjust diameter downhole, often used in oil & gas applications where the tool must pass through smaller casing before expanding.

For industrial and HDD rigs, PDC reamers and DTH hole openers are the preferred attachments for enlarging boreholes, offering durability and compatibility with standard shanks. These are selected based on formation hardness, required diameter, and compatibility with the existing pilot bit and drill string.

Note

While hole openers are designed for rock and soil formations rather than wood, industrial spade bits or hole saws are typically used for wood. For ground drilling applications like HDD, DTH or tricone hole openers remain the standard choice for enlarging bores through soil and rock formations.

Selection depends primarily on formation type: DTH hole openers excel in hard rock using percussion and tungsten carbide buttons; tricone hole openers suit mixed hard-to-medium formations with roller cone action; PDC reamers perform best in soft-to-medium formations requiring stabilization and smooth cutting with diamond compact cutters.
